Do cough medicines really work?

Struggling to decide whether or not to commit to getting something to remedy your cough? Dr Sarah Jarvis might be able to help you decide. She’s a health specialist and an expert in fighting coughs. In this video she outlines whether cough medicines actually work.

Debating whether or not to take the fight to your cough? The right cough syrup can help relieve your symptoms of coughing and sore throats whilst you’re waiting for your immune system to fight off the infection. According to the NHS website ‘whilst a cough syrup can’t stop your cough, it will help you cough less’. So, don’t suffer, relieve your cough symptoms whilst your body fights it off.

A dry cough is caused by inflammation in your upper airways. This causes you to cough even though there’s no mucus blocking your airways. To relieve the symptoms, dry cough medicine contains a demulcent. This helps to soothe and has a calming effect on your throat, which in turn helps stop coughing and irritations.

A chesty cough on the other hand is caused by your body producing lots of mucus. This results in blocking the upper airways. To combat this, chesty cough syrups contain an expectorant which will help bring the mucus up and get rid of the congestion.

Help treat your symptoms. Release the bull within and get ready to feel the power.
